Tak Lung Restaurant
This restaurant is an absolute treasure! Everything about it screams authentic local food - the location, the decoration, the food, the people. Everything.
My favorite part of this restaurant is that it serves very unique food that is hard to find elsewhere in Hong Kong. These are CLASSIC dishes. To start the meal, we had "gold coin chicken" 金錢雞. The funny thing about this dish is that it doesn't actually have any chicken in it. I believe it gets it name from the same. It is shaped like the old Chinese coins. This bite-sized, orgasmic treat is actually layered BBQ pork, liver, and lard topped with a thin slice of ginger and drizzled with a honey glaze. The different textures and flavors made it quite the unforgettable experience. These can be ordered individually by piece.
Next, we had another classic dish called "duck foot wrap" 鴨腳包. It looks like a sushi roll but is nothing like it. There are a lot of pieces inside including BBQ pork, ham, roast pork, taro, and of course duck foot. These pieces are all wrapped in flattened duck intestines. It's quite the package that somehow just all works together. These are ordered in packs of 4 pieces.
Another one of their signature dishes is the sweet and sour pork. They are able keep the outside crispy and inside juicy even with the slathering of sweet and sour sauce. This dish also tastes a little bit different than usual because the sauce is a homemade sauce with hawthorn in it! I can see what it's a signature dish here.
The tea infused chicken was a pleasant surprise! I'm generally a huge fan of chicken already so I might be biased, but I really liked the smokey, tea infused flavor of the chicken. Besides the flavor, it was also juicy.
Our veggie dish was a pea sprout in soup with minced meat and garlic. I loved the crunchiness of the pea sprouts and simplicity of the broth. The whole cloves of garlic really sealed the deal for me on this dish.
After eating 5 dishes, we insatiably decided to order more. We decided to go with something that none of us had had before - stuffed chicken wing served with deep fried milk. When this dish came, I asked the server if we're supposed to eat it together and he laugh and told me to eat them separately. The plump chicken wing had the bones removed so that it could be stuffed with another tender meat. We couldn't quite make out what it was, but it was good. The wing was juicy and meaty. The deep fried milk was also a tasty treat. Piping hot, the milk inside tasted fresh and sweet.
Having quite the sweet tooth, I requested to have their signature Malaysian sponge cake and it was probably the best one I've ever had. Steaming hot and jiggly, the sponge cake was dense enough to have substance to it yet still airy enough to be light. I also enjoyed that it wasn't overly sweet. There were 8 slices for our party of 5 and I definitely ate 2 of the slices.
Aside from the sponge cake, the restaurant also gives purple glutinous rice soup with taro and chrysanthemum flower jelly as a complimentary dessert. Needless to say, we were pretty full by the end of the meal.
In addition to the amazing food, the service was great and the servers were friendly and chatty. The tables in the restaurant were well spaced so it doesn't feel like you're sitting with the table next to you. Albeit a little bit old, the restaurant definitely has a classic restaurant feel. Being located in San Po Kong, it's not the easiest place to get to but it is well worth the trek. We definitely pigged out and it still only cost $200 a person. Not bad for a delicious and memorable dinner.
