Salami Restaurant

First, this place is old according to what I heard. They have the traditional kind of HK steak and grilled food. If you have some idea of what that is, and you want to try a good one, this place is good.
But if you are unfamiliar with the local steak house style, you may want to ask your friends first although I'll try to explain a bit here. It is NOT for foodie or picky eater type. It is really very basic food suited to the local tastes.
First of all, this shop is old. I mean, its a bit run down. Not very bad but not very good either. It really has the very hard worked over look. But, at 6:30 people started piling in and soon enough there were a few waiting outside even on the rainy night. The reason seems to be the steak is really nice. I ordered medium and low and behold, it was medium. Not the usual Outback overcooked medium, or the real western steakhouse "what's your problem? Medium ruins good meat! Here's a nice bloody rare.." medium.... It was nearly perfect. When I cut it, it had nice soft interior and a bit red, nicely juicy and very easy to cut. All the way through the nice thick sirloin. And the whole time I ate it. Of course as it cooled, it got just slightly tough but it was still fine. My friend got chicken which was the thigh piece with no bone and seemed to have been tenderized but not sure. I mean with the meat hammer thing. I have heard rumors that these types of restaurants love to over use meat tenderizers powders but honestly I could care less if that were true. But I doubt that because it was still quite tasty. I think they do that to cook it evenly, which it was. They serve the HK style borst soup, aka vegetable soup first, with two little soft buns and a pat of butter. Soup is slightly spicy with a rich taste in my opinion its one of the better tasting ones.
The slight downside for me is they serve it on a sizzle platter which is fun, you need to hold up the cloth napkin provided, lest you get grease on your I ♥ HK t-shirt, but they put a lot of mixed vegetables like corn carrot peas and a few French fries underneath your steak or whatever ... I actually don't mind eating this over cooked mess but somehow I think if they left it off it would be fine. Maybe your not really supposed to be eat it. I don't know. But like I said, this is not a Michelin experience. Its more like a US east coast diner. And a pretty good one in my humble opinion.
The meal comes with rice or spaghetti. We rejected both and ordered some fries. I couldn't imagine eating all that much because each plate had a lot of food. And we saw the huge plates of spaghetti... And saw lots of people ordering different things and sharing as a family. And a few couples only ordering one and sharing. So, its really a lot of food. I felt totally full, but not overstuffed. Still could have very easily shared.
But the really nice thing is the service. I am usually OK with HK's brisk and sometimes brusk service, because its usually fairly efficient if not always polite. Here they were polite, FRIENDLY, and even a bit humorous. Even the customers were friendly and you could feel they like it. The kitchen is a bit smoky. The interior is slightly dark. They have alcohol and mixed drinks. After you finish, they bring you ice cream which is a really nice touch cos they're not even stingy. Its a fair scoop and some nuts on it. If your not a food snob, please try this place. Its nice. Its truly local. I will return.
