Chong Fat Chiu Chow Restaurant

Chong Fat is probably the best known Chiu Chow Restaurant in Kowloon and has a rather long history - well before Chiu Chow cuisine was pushed up-class by some other late comers.

We went there for casual family dinner last week and ordered marinated goose (good - but rather expensive at HK$150 for a small serving portion); stir-fried "jie lan" vegetable with dried fish (good); oyster omelette (not bad, much better than those we had in Taipei); stir-fried chicken fillet with bitter melon (average); and two bowls of congee with minced pork and also with oyster, respectively (very delicious, though rather oily).

Chong Fat's local tradition is well reflected by the booth at its entrance where a wide variety of Chiu Chow delicacies were displayed and cooked on the spot for customers' selection. But some of the items could be very expensive - like cold crabs (not hot, usually at room temperature); lobsters; and shark's fin soup.

Very causal restaurant. BYO without charging corkage (based on my personal experience). Could be very expensive if not careful. Beware of certain seafood items at seasonal prices.
