The Peranakan
Located at Claymore Connect, The Peranakan's decor is unashamedly chinois and grand; as if we expected anything less of a Peranakan restaurant. Think glass chandeliers, floral wallpaper, porcelain chinaware, old-school ornate round marble tables and coffeeshop chairs. The food is traditional Peranakan with a menu sporting some hard-to-find dishes like the very tedious-to-make nasi ulam ($15), a rich dish with lots of minced fish, vegetables and a mountain of raw herbs that have to be very finely sliced and takes hours to prepare.
Other must-tries are the classic Ayam Buah Keluak ($19) which comes with double the amount of flesh from the buah keluak, an Indonesian black nut, and the Sambal Udang Petai ($29) which has a surprisingly fresh-tasting sambal tumis (stir-fried chilli paste).
