La Sandwicherie
Opened in the middle of the bustling strip of Queen’s Road Central, Sheung Wan, La Sandwicherie is a French take-away-style sandwich shop that prides itself on the premium ingredients that are shipped from France. It offers eight sandwiches that cater to both meat and fish eaters, as well as vegetarians. Customers can have their sandwich hot or cold, and on white or brown bread.
Le Saumon (HK$38) on toasted white bread was delicious. The bread was crusty and the sandwich had just the right amount of chives and cream cheese. Although there was not a lot of salmon, it was still fresh and savoury.
Le Poulet (HK$25) with brown bread was another favourite. A lot of people are reluctant to eat brown bread because of its grainy texture but the one they use here is excellent. The chicken was tender and juicy, and the tarragon and mayonnaise sauce was also not overwhelming, complementing both the chicken and the freshly toasted bread.
The house-made ice tea – offered for an additional HK$10 in the meal deal when one buys two sandwiches (or you can have soup, instead) – was surprisingly tasty; it wasn’t bitter or too sweet.
As we’re big eaters, my friend and I found the size of the sandwiches a little small and unsatisfying, so we ordered another one – Le Chèvre (HK$38) on toasted brown bread, and we also tried the soup of the day – the fresh vegetable soup (HK$22). The goat cheese in the sandwich was strong and smooth; the addition of honey balanced the flavour, while grilled aubergine gave texture. We loved the hot vegetable soup, which was refreshing even in the hot Hong Kong weather.
